Gilbert was ranked 28th place out of the 100 best places to live in America, which explains this fast growth. In 2010 Gilbert celebrates the 90th anniversary of the incorporation of their town. The town first started off with only one square mile dedicated mostly to agriculture. The town was initially developed as a train station in the late 1890s. Gilbert sure has grown since then, and now encompasses 73 square miles and has over 220,000 residents. Gilbert celebrates its diversity with its annual Global Village Festival every April. This multi-cultural event is a special event for people of all ages. This tradition brings together neighbors and friends in a friendly and educational way where the world is at your doorstep. There is plenty of ethnic food, art and gifts for sale. There is even a hands on section of the festival that caters to children. They can learn more about music, art, dance and history of other cultures while having lots of fun.

If you like to leave the indoor Gilbert heating behind you, one of the best ways to get out in the fresh air in Gilbert is on a bicycle. Gilbert has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as being extremely bike friendly. Not only does Gilbert have bike lanes on almost every street, they also have some great options for riding on paths and trails. Riding a bike is a great way to get around town. While Gilbert is great on its own, it also has other benefits surrounding it. Gilbert is bordered by Tempe, Mesa and Chandler. The capital of Arizona, Phoenix, is also nearby. These surrounding cities are all great in their own respects. Whether you want shopping, great restaurants, night life or a fancy hotel to spend a relaxing weekend, this entire metropolitan area has it all.
