How to Pick the Best Arizona City for Retirement

» Phoenix, Az

Retiring to Arizona, was a decision we made in 2004 and have not regretted it a single moment.

One difficult decision was picking the right city for us… Lots of folks think of Arizona as being nothing but cactus and desert.

In reality, Arizona has some of the most diverse topography that you will find anywhere. Did you know that more than 27% of Arizona is considered forest land?

Yes the two largest cities in Arizona are Phoenix and Tucson… And they are in the desert. Both on Interstate 10.

If you want four seasons you can pick Flagstaff… Home of one of the two ski resorts in Arizona… Sitting at over 6900 feet elevation…it gets plenty of snow in the winter.

If you are tired of the 115° summertime heat in Phoenix in Arizona… Flagstaff will offer cool evenings and highs in the 80s during the day.

Picking the right city in Arizona for your retirement will not be easy… There are that many choices. The good news is that they should be a fun process because of the diversity of the towns in Arizona.

Please do not forget that Arizona just celebrated its centennial on Valentine’s Day 2012. It was the last state of the 48 continental states granted statehood, February 14, 1912.

If I could pick one reason why I am glad I retired in Arizona it would be the sunshine. Well over 300 days a year you will be bathed in bright sunshine.

You tend to take the sunshine for granted… Until you see a rare cloudy day.

Playing golf on one of the over 400 golf courses in Arizona requires taking sweaters on and off in the winter depending on whether the sun is behind a cloud or not.

Playing golf in Arizona during the summer, does not require a large wardrobe… Almost everyone wear shorts… Hats with wide brims… The downside of the sunny days is that you can get skin cancer really easy if you don’t take protective measures.

From the sophistication of Scottsdale and high-end shopping areas… To the small town feel of Payson and Wickenburg… Arizona offers something for each retiree.

The population of Arizona is 6.4 million people… Pretty close to the population of the greater Houston area… There is plenty of room to spread out in Arizona.

So why don’t you join the many happy retirees that are enjoying the sunshine in Arizona… Just remember picking the right city is going to be difficult… But fun as well.

Come on down and enjoy yourself.
